Showing Your Employees Gratitude

Showing Your Employees Gratitude

Dear Jenny,

I’m an HR manager and with the holiday season approaching, I’m wondering what we can do to show our employees how grateful we are for them. We can’t toss around big bonuses, but we’d like to still make sure they feel appreciated. Any creative ideas?

Thanks,

Appreciation Anna

Dear Anna,

It’s wonderful that you recognize the unique role your employees play in ensuring the company’s success. It certainly seems like a great time to show employees how much they are appreciated.

The way to show appreciation is not always financial, though it can be when there have been significant results achieved. Sometimes just making time for one-on-one thank you’s during the season will go a long way toward making your team feel appreciated and recognized for the work they’ve done.

With the “thank you,” make sure to convey a sense of pride in how they go about their job, though. If you can share some stories that illustrate what good employees they are, something that showcases their character or contributions to your organization’s mission or values, then that will help them feel the gratitude you have for them. Volunteering some time to go over their specific contributions and roles is a way of letting them know that you see what they do and value it.

Show appreciation by giving employees something unexpected, which is code for no SWAG. What made my top list of favorite gifts from an employer? Nice olive oil, grocery store gift cards, creative gift baskets, fancy chocolate anything, or an extra day off.

It’s important to let employees know why they are appreciated so they continue to do a good job throughout the year. You can also get ideas from other managers who have successfully demonstrated appreciation for their teams. And once you’ve recognized your team, don’t let it stop there! Continue to show appreciation and thanks for the work they do in the future.

It may also be a good idea to consider rewarding employees for their hard work throughout the year by having a party or catered lunch. Some companies do this at holiday time, but it can be done any time of the year when there has been good team performance.

You might also consider showing appreciation to your boss and other managers who work above you. Sometimes managers forget how much appreciation they need too. And who doesn’t love baked goods? Consider having a virtual baking party or happy hour to get the season off to a sweet start!

Remember, it’s not always about money. A little gratitude and appreciation go a long way and will go even further in keeping your team engaged, motivated, and excited to contribute their best throughout the year.

And speaking of appreciation, I personally want to thank my amazing clients. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and I can’t wait to see continued success for your businesses in 2022.

Happy holidays,

Sincerely,
Jenny
